Description
Located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this project dramatically enlarges an existing ‘compact’ bungalow, providing the client with a larger family home that directly responds to, and celebrates it’s context.
Taking full advantage of the bushland setting and temperate climate, the new home embraces the idea of indoor/outdoor living.
The proposals, which add an additional 140% of floor space, and significant value to the existing bungalow, were granted DA approval by Northern Beaches Council in 6 weeks.
A simple, yet dramatic series of gestures, respond to both site context and client brief, creating a tailored contemporary home that’s in dialogue with it’s surroundings, ensuring greenery and planting are in close proximity to family life at all times.
A new 17m long, floating floor plane extends from the rear of the existing dwelling, out towards lush greenery to the rear. Uses previously compressed into the original property now sit in a linear sequence along this new axis; from living, to dining, to kitchen, to external deck/bbq area, (to garden).
With this new space framing strategic views out, the different uses within, define varying degrees of enclosure. Where desirable, sections of floor to ceiling sliding glass can be drawn back fully into the adjacent walls, eliminating any distinction between internal and external space.
This ‘blurring’ is further enhanced by a soffit that mirrors the new ground plane. A series of expressed ceiling joists continue from inside to out, incorporating lighting at night and filtering sunlight during the day.
Alongside, a new two storey element incorporates deep overhangs to the east and west, whilst housing new bedrooms and bathrooms, with the master suite at first floor, positioned to enjoy stunning views out to lush dense foliage and an existing creek to the west.
